A letter to Gary Bauer, president of American Values

As some of you may know, I just started a group on LinkedIn called Patriots for America. While I was researching and figuring out that group name, I ran across a website called www.ouramericanvalues.org. I looked around a bit on the website and saw a comment on the “About Us” page that made me think that maybe this site was actually anti- 2nd Amendment. I called the number on the website (this is actually a website for a non-profit organization) and talked to a very nice young lady that referred me to the president of the organization, Gary Bauer. Gary Bauer worked in the Reagan administration and he ran for President of the US for the 2000 election. I gave the gal my email info and name and Mr. Bauer sent me an email. He says he supports the 2nd Amendment although it’s not one of his organizations primary issues. I sent a response email to him. I have included the emails for your perusal. Check out the emails and check out his website. If you agree with me, please send him an email (use the Contact Us link on his site) and ask him to put a statement on his website that unequivocally shows his support for the 2nd Amendment.

Charles,

Thank you for your interest in American Values. Second amendment rights are not one of the primary issues we focus on, but I am personally supportive of the second amendment.

Thanks for the email.

I checked out your website and I agree with nearly everything I see there.  The reason I called the other day was a comment on your “About Us” page.  In the third paragraph it says “We work for streets without bullets, schools that prepare our children for success, laws that protect our people and a government that serves its citizens.” The first phrase of the sentence about bullets left me wondering whether you were supportive of the 2nd Amendment.  It, like most gun control statements, personifies the objects (bullets and guns) and takes the onus off of the criminal act and the criminal using the weapon.  Bullets on the streets aren’t the problem, people using guns in criminal acts is the problem.  If you truly support the 2nd Amendment, I would suggest that the statement should be reworded to start “We work for streets without crime, schools…” or something to that effect.  While I would personally like to see you put a statement on the site supporting the 2nd Amendment, the statement rewritten as I have suggested would at least render your site silent on the issue of the 2nd Amendment.  This would be better than the way it’s written now as like me, others may misinterpret the statement as anti-gun/anti- 2nd Amendment.

Thanks for your consideration.  I plan on making a visit to your website every once in a while.  It’s a good site.
